Why Recovery Means Learning to Feel Again

For many people, addiction isn't simply about seeking pleasure—it's about escaping pain. Whether it's pornography, alcohol, drugs, gambling, food, shopping, or another compulsive behaviour, addiction often becomes a way of numbing difficult emotions that feel overwhelming, confusing, or too painful to face.

Over time, we can lose touch with what we're really feeling. Instead of recognising emotions like loneliness, shame, grief, fear, or disappointment, we reach for the behaviour that provides temporary relief. The addiction becomes a coping strategy—but one that ultimately keeps us stuck.

A vital part of recovery is not simply stopping the addictive behaviour; it's learning how to reconnect with ourselves. That means slowing down enough to notice our emotions, giving them a name, understanding what they are trying to tell us, and finding healthier ways to respond.

The emotions wheel is a helpful tool for building emotional awareness. Many people can only identify feeling "good" or "bad," but our emotional lives are far richer than that. Expanding our emotional vocabulary helps us understand our needs, communicate more effectively, and reduce the urge to numb what we're experiencing.

Emotions Wheel

As you look at the wheel, ask yourself:

  • What am I feeling right now?
  • What happened before I felt this way?
  • What might this emotion be trying to communicate?
  • What do I need instead of turning to my addictive behaviour?

Recovery is about more than abstinence. It's about developing the emotional understanding to experience life's highs and lows without needing to escape them. As you become more familiar with your emotions, you'll discover that they are not something to fear—they are valuable messengers that can guide you towards healing, connection, and lasting change.
